On your home page, take your cursor over the emptysideyspace that calls itself your display pic (which btw is called an avatar on dA). You click on it then it asks you to upload pic that you want as avatar with the size that you need to have (50x50 pixels).

et voila!

why pain? Crop whatever image to a square on photoshop. And then change size to 50x50.
